Get involved! Raise awareness in the One Billion Rising Movement

In our society emotions and experiences can be buried inside of a person with no positive way to express them, to heal from them, or to release them. Dance used as a form of self expression is an opportunity to express and release those feelings, and to share with others our experiences. Perhaps even to heal from emotional and psychological wounds.

To quote Dr. Charne Furcron, "Small transformations occur in every dance class"

In working with urban youth in Atlanta Dr. Furcron has observed these transformations. "Dance is making positive, measurable differences" in their lives. She can attest to the increase in self confidence and self concept gained by these youth. Through dance therapy, she has seen that the dancers are better equipped to problem solve and become successful citizens.

Managing ones emotions is key to success. Children as well as adults need to develop healthy ways of dealing with life's darker moments on a personal level. We need to learn to express, self-soothe, and even rejoice with our whole being!

On a global and united front, dance provides an opportunity to join together to acknowledge and confront issues such as rape and crimes against women. With a desire for change, the One Billion Rising movement is an opportunity to join together through global activism and declare that "It's time to break the chain!"

I am incredibly inspired by this movement as it is a brilliant display of coming along side our sisters and dancing openly to confront the issue as opposed to shaming victims and deferring our eyes.
