Peppermint Oil

Peppermint (Mentha piperita) essential oil is my "go to" oil; it smells amazing!

I have resorted to smelling the empty bottle while anxiously awaiting my YoungLiving order to arrive; and as I can think of nothing better to so, I decided to write about Peppermint Oil.

With so many applications for this one oil, I recommend it as the one to try first if you have never experienced the benefits of essential oils before. It is very strong so be careful not to get it in your eye! You also only need 2 or 3 drops at a time, so try not to over-do it!

Purchase Retail:
Therapeutic grade Peppermint Oil is a must have oil! It takes a pound of peppermint to make a 15ml bottle of YL oil, and its retail price is $28.29. It is one of the more affordable oils and is steam distilled from leaves, stems, and flower buds in North America. There are cheaper versions on the market but those contain solvents, additives, and fillers and as the FDA only requires a company to use 5% essential oil in a bottle to mark it as 100% essential oil, I only recommend that you buy from Young Living as they have a seed to seal guarantee that what you are purchasing is 100% real therapeutic grade essential oil - no solvents, no additives, just pure goodness!

Grow your own plants:
If you cannot afford to buy a bottle, I would recommend growing peppermint yourself and making tinctures and teas out of the plant material. You will want to grow the plant organically without the use of any chemicals to ensure it is safe for consumption. You can make fresh tea from the leaves during the summer, and dry the leaves for use during the winter months. Not only is the tea good for you. it is also delicious!

Buy a Starter Kit!
Young Living sells starter kits that include samples of peppermint oil and a 5ml bottle, as well as information on how it can be used. If you want to get serious about switching over your medicine cabinet, cleaning products, and beauty products over to essential oils I would highly recommend that you purchase a Premium Starter Kit with the Bamboo Diffuser for $160 and become a YL member. This kit is awesome, and the membership gets you 24% off on all essential oils!

Of course sharing all of this information with you, has still not resulted in a bottle magically appearing in front of me. So I will resort to checking the tracking number on my shipment and waiting somewhat impatiently.

Get involved! Raise awareness in the One Billion Rising Movement

In our society emotions and experiences can be buried inside of a person with no positive way to express them, to heal from them, or to release them. Dance used as a form of self expression is an opportunity to express and release those feelings, and to share with others our experiences. Perhaps even to heal from emotional and psychological wounds.

To quote Dr. Charne Furcron, "Small transformations occur in every dance class"

In working with urban youth in Atlanta Dr. Furcron has observed these transformations. "Dance is making positive, measurable differences" in their lives. She can attest to the increase in self confidence and self concept gained by these youth. Through dance therapy, she has seen that the dancers are better equipped to problem solve and become successful citizens.

Managing ones emotions is key to success. Children as well as adults need to develop healthy ways of dealing with life's darker moments on a personal level. We need to learn to express, self-soothe, and even rejoice with our whole being!

On a global and united front, dance provides an opportunity to join together to acknowledge and confront issues such as rape and crimes against women. With a desire for change, the One Billion Rising movement is an opportunity to join together through global activism and declare that "It's time to break the chain!"

I am incredibly inspired by this movement as it is a brilliant display of coming along side our sisters and dancing openly to confront the issue as opposed to shaming victims and deferring our eyes.

To find an event in your area (or start one!) go to the One Billion Rising website,

"In 2015 thousands of One Billion Rising Revolution events will take place throughout the world. These events are organized and produced by local activists.
Find an event near you and join us as we DRUM! DANCE! RISE!" - One Billion Rising
Some events are as soon as next month so take action now!

Essential Oils & Dance

Welcome to the essential oils blog for dancers and dance therapists!

You do not need to be a dancer to benefit from these holistic tips and tricks, however you may need to purchase a Dictionary of Ballet Terms and Definitions if there are French words that you are unfamiliar with.

I created this blog to offer insight into holistic ways of treating injuries, managing stress, and maintaining optimal   mental stamina during those extra long rehearsals and performances!

In the upcoming weeks we will be discussing 9 Oils that will change your life both in and out of the dance room. I hope to give you the information necessary to make informed decisions about the products that you use and to inspire you to start your own essential oils journey.

After researching the quality (or lack of quality) in the essential oils market I have found a company that I absolutely love, Young Living. They are completely obsessive about the plants used in their oils to the point that they have their own farms and strict soil requirements. For new land to even be considered as a possible location for a Young Living farm it can't have been farmed in the last 200 years!

As we start this informational journey in 2015, I highly recommend that you acquire a Young Living Premium Starter Kit (with Bamboo Diffuser) so that you can try these remedies at home and experience first hand the benefits there of. Member/Sponsor Code: #2187161

Who am I?

I work as a process analyst in the information technology field, dance with the "In His Steps" ballet company (whenever I get the chance), and teach essential oils classes in the Finger Lakes Region in Upstate New York.

"Geek by Day, Ballerina by Night, Essential Oils Advocate in Between" and as my husband has reminded me, I am his all of the time. I have been studying essential oils for the last two years, and they have changed how I view commercial medicine, my cleaning products, and even what I eat!

Practically bursting out of my soft shoes to pass on what I have learned....

so stay tuned!

Sincerely,
                     Alysia
